Are you a strategic leader with a deep understanding of the automotive industry in Scotland? The Scottish Motor Trader Association (SMTA) is seeking an exceptional Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to champion the interests of our members and drive positive change within the sector. 


About SMTA 


The Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) is a respected trade organisation representing automotive businesses across Scotland. Our mission is to encourage, protect and promote the interests of our members, association and the industry for growth, professionalism, and sustainability. 


Key Responsibilities as Chief Executive Officer 


  • Develop high quality business strategies and plans ensuring their alignment with short-term and long-term objectives. 
  • Lead and motivate subordinates to advance employee engagement develop a high performing managerial team. 
  • Foster strong relationships with members, industry partners and the wider community to enhance the collaboration and knowledge-sharing. 
  • Ensure effective governance, financial management, and compliance with regulatory requirements. 
  • Deliver reliable monthly accounts and KPI comparisons. 
  • Identify new revenue streams and deliver within agreed timescales.  
  • Identify short and long term threats and successfully plan mitigations for these threats. 
  • Enforce adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the associations legality and business ethics. 
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of the market and the challenges facing the industry. 

Requirements and skills 


  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role ideally within the automotive industry. 
  • Strong advocacy and communication skills, with the ability to represent the interests of members at local and national. 
  • Experience of strategic planning, organisational development, stakeholder agreement 
  • A respected figure in the industry would be desirable. 
  • Knowledge of the Scottish automotive market, including regulatory frameworks, market trends and challenges would be desirable. 
  • Develop contacts and positive presence in the press.  
  • Develop a public profile and represent and promote our members and the industry.  
  • Be financially literate and produce a budget along with a strategy to achieve the budget.  
  • Represent the SMTA at the highest level with manufacturers, suppliers, government ministers and other trade associations. 
  • The role will involve travelling throughout the UK and Europe, so occasional overnights stays will be required.
