Full Job Description

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

This is an ideal opportunity for GPs to gain experience of working in multi-disciplinary community alcohol and drug teams and to improve their clinical skills in the management of drug and alcohol problems. We are offering permanent part time sessions, with an induction and clinical support from senior clinicians.

Treatment, care and support for people with problem drug and alcohol use is delivered through integrated working between health and social services. As well as being one of the largest and most dynamic drug and alcohol treatment service providers in Europe, our services are also at the forefront of service developments including heroin assisted treatment, integrated community Hepatitis C and HIV care pathways and community based rehabilitation and recovery supports.

Medical Officers deliver a wide range of interventions to people with problem drug and alcohol use with the aim of improving health and social outcomes. These include assessment and review of their health needs, substitute prescribing and detoxification, relapse prevention prescribing, providing testing and treatment for Hepatitis C and HIV. Medical Officers are based in integrated community teams, carry a caseload, work closely with specialist services and GPs and are professionally accountable to senior clinicians. They assess and review individuals with drug and/or alcohol dependency.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Alcohol and Drug Services offers all Medical Officers a thorough induction, supervision, CPD and appraisal. We are committed to developing a career path in the field of drug and alcohol treatment.

Sessions are across West Dunbartonshire Addictions Service teams although the job advert references our central office Brand Street. Interested candidates are encouraged to phone to discuss opportunities.
