Full Job Description

We are looking for a Weather Presenter to come and join the team as part of BBC Scotland News and Current Affairs. There are rarely two days of weather the same in Scotland and our team covers all corners of Scotland across all of the varied seasons. This is a rare opportunity to join a busy, hard-working team. You will work across our national TV and radio output on a shift rotation from 0600 in the morning through until 2300 at night, and also across all of our local and regional output from Shetland to Dumfries, Selkirk to Aberdeen. Broadcasting on both TV and radio during the week and at weekends you will help keep our audience informed on what the weather will bring, and the impact it will have, across Scotland. Alongside our linear broadcasts you will also produce content that will reach audiences across all of our digital and social media channels.,

  • Take the information supplied and produce on own initiative a weather story for broadcast which is consistent with the meteorological briefing.

  • Take the weather forecast, as briefed by a meteorologist, and explain it to the audience in an interesting and engaging manner which entertains and informs.

  • Present broadcasts on TV and radio which cover the impacts relevant to the audience through locality, events and geographical differences.

  • Demonstrate a professional presentation style with the ability to present in the studio.

  • Be familiar with the relevant digital platforms and have ability to produce and present content which suits the style and audience for each as directed by local editors.

  • Alert news colleagues to developing weather stories and have the ability to help guide newsgathering.

  • May be requested to contribute to other local, regional and nations' output as required.

  • Present other non-weather related programmes/segments within programmes from time to time.

  • Be involved in on air exchanges with other presenters, being ready to use acquired knowledge about weather in that conversation.

  • Make the best use of new technologies - including developments in social media - in delivering content to audiences and to set an example in learning to operate new systems and adapting to different working methods.

  • An organised approach to work, and the ability to meet tight deadlines with a minimum of supervision.

  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC Health and Safety policy.

    A very good understanding of the theory and science of weather with appropriate broadcasting experience.

  • Capable user of broadcast and computer based technology and stays abreast of developments in this field.

  • Strong team working and ability to build strong relationships with key people in other parts of the BBC.

  • Ability to convey story and programme ideas and to contribute to the planning process.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.

  • Freelancers are eligible to apply for an internal role if they are on a Worker Contract and they have worked continuously for 6 months.
