5 ways to motivate your team

Any manager struggles occasionally to keep their team focused and excited about the projects they’re working on.

Just ask Jose Mourhino. On second thoughts, best not.

It’s all very well giving an inspirational pep talk in the canteen but sometimes oil and gas workers need to be able to see more practical changes and tangible opportunities.

Here are five ways to keep spirits up, safety at a max and, of course, the black gold flowing.

Offer Rewards

Working offshore can be a potentially hazardous environment, with mishaps mainly caused by lapses in concentration. Combat this and keep your 100% safety record by providing team rewards for maintaining a safe work environment.

Give Compliments

Even level-headed engineers and hard-hatted drillers never tire of hearing good words about their work. Their appreciation increases if they’ve been working especially hard.

So, if a member of your team has done a good job, don’t be shy about letting them know – you’ll leave them feeling accomplished and ready to take on even more.

Provide Personal Space

An oil rig or refinery can sometimes be uncomfortable place to work over extended time periods, so make sure your team has a quiet, welcoming space to take a break and properly relax.

Studies have shown employees who must contend with poor working conditions become stressed. Conversely, they show people are more relaxed and work harder in an environment where they don’t mind spending time.

Healthy Competition

The emphasis here is on the ‘healthy’, as we all know what monsters we can turn into when our competitive streak is unleashed.

Plan your competition around a work-related goal – one that does not compromise safety – and split your staff into teams so it’s not about individuals.

The prize could be an extra luxury to enjoy while offshore.

Create Visual Goals

Most people are visual learners and will forget the majority of things said to them, if it’s not written down and highlighted.

So, if you’re having a strategy meeting or planning that day’s drilling operations, draw up visual boards.

This way your team will have images in their heads to recall and refer to throughout their shift.
