Age is no barrier to opportunity

Here’s a scary thought: babies born in the year 2000 are now entering the workplace.

It’s hard to believe Millennials are now 16 and, if they aren’t yet old enough to vote in a general election, they are definitely capable of influencing its outcome through social media.

How to harness the talents of this generation is one of the topics that will be discussed at the Call and Contact Centre industry’s annual convention, which takes place in Glasgow next month.

More than 400 representatives from across the industry will pack into the Hilton Hotel for talks, discussions and networking sessions.

On the agenda are two different age groups: digital natives who were born with a tablet in their hand and the more mature members of the workforce whose lack of social media savvy is balanced against wisdom, experience and the ability to concentrate for more than 15 seconds.

The technology may be different, but basically its the ‘old cop, young rookie’ scenario for the Call Centre generation but this time it’s going to take more than Dirty Harry to sort out the rules of engagement.

Whatever group you fall into, there are plenty of opportunities for you to make your mark among the Call & Contact Centre vacancies on s1jobs.

From sales advisers to web chat consultants, there are openings for people who are good at communicating across many different channels.

If you have a solid financial services background, are fluent in a second language, can explain technical issues in easy-to-understand terms to customers who don’t have a scoobie, then all these skills are as essential as your digital work.

While training in the technical know-how will be given, what employers are looking for are all those life skills, personal traits and sense of responsibility that you bring to the job – and none of this can be taught in two weeks in the company’s training academy.

So if you want to prove that you’re made of the right stuff, anything you can add to your CV – from Scouting to skiing – will make a difference.

And if you’re older, demonstrate you are open-minded and excited about new challenges.

At the end of the day it’s all about keeping customers happy – and if you can sort out their query it doesn’t matter what the date is on your birth certificate.
