Bet on yourself to bring big rewards

The finalists in this year’s Insurance Times Awards must make a presentation this month in front of a panel of judges, ahead of the awards ceremony in December when the winners will be announced.

These are the Oscars of the insurance world, a chance for the stars of underwriting and loss adjusting to dress to impress and be feted by their peers.

It’s a glamorous, glittering event when all the big names in the industry will be present to recognise the contribution of its most talented staff.

Gongs are handed out at every level, from apprentices to CEOs, and there are awards for outstanding customer service and innovative new insurance products.

Of course, if you have ambitions to be among the gong winners, the best place to boost your career is to start with s1jobs.

All of the best insurance vacancies in Scotland are posted here, including openings for Development Executives, Claims Managers and Commercial Brokers.

Once you have your feet under the table, however, don’t hold back. By entering industry competitions, such as the Insurance Times Awards, you could make a name for yourself more quickly than you may have imagined.

It does take time and effort to work through the entry process for prestigious competitions but doing this will make you think harder about your own role and the ways in which you could do it better.

So even if you don’t win, the act of taking part will provide you with useful career feedback.

It’s too late to enter for this year’s Awards but, if you want to network with others in the business, there are plenty of opportunities to hone your skills for next time.

For instance, you could head to Dubai in February 2017 for the World Insurance Congress. This global gathering of insurers and top level speakers will provide insight into the future of the industry.

A three-night stay at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel might be stretching the budget but heap glory on your company by picking up awards and the Financial Director will be more inclined to view exotic trips as ideal for expanding your insight and the company brand.

So next time awards season comes around, don’t put off completing that entry or decide there’s no point in entering.

If you’re serious about getting the most out of your career in insurance, it pays to have high hopes and self-belief.
