Elon Musk
No it’s not a new fragrance from Lynx. It’s an unusual name for a unique guy. Elon Musk is a man of many talents but best known for founding Tesla Motors and Space X, which launched a commercial spacecraft in 2012.
Born in South Africa, he developed an interest in computers and sold his first computer game at the age of 12.
He has degrees in economics and physics. He was two days into his physics PhD when he dropped out to set up online city guide, Zip2, which he later sold for more than $300 million.
Tesla is all about producing affordable, mass market electric cars while his other company, Solar City, provides solar panels for businesses.
His Musk Foundation helps ensure a future for humankind through renewable energy sources and space exploration. A true rocket man.
Steve Wozniak
A Silicon Valley icon, Steve Wozniak was “the other Steve” behind Apple.
The pair founded the company in 1976 and while Steve Jobs became the public face, Wozniak spent his time busy backstage designing products.
He was awarded the Heinz Award for Technology, The Economy and Employment for single-handedly designing the first personal computer and using his passion for maths and electronics to inspire children and teachers.
A life-long philanthropist, he is worshipped by those working in his field and beyond.
A fine role model for innovative engineers.
Helen Greiner
Inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 2007, British-born Helen Greiner is co-founder of robotics company iRobot and heads up CyPhyWorks.
Greiner, whose family moved to the US when she was five, wanted to work with robots after watching Star Wars as a child and being fascinated by R2D2.
She has worked at NASA and at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT.
She is now at CyPhyWorks, the company she founded, which makes drones for reconnaissance and communications.
In 2014 she was named a Presidential Ambassador for Global Leadership by President Barack Obama.
