As Adele showed at the Grammys’ Awards night by redistributing her gong for Album of the Year to rival Beyonce, credit where credit’s due.
And right now when it comes to Financial Services, much credit seems due to those working in credit unions.
According to the Association of British Credit Unions Limited (ABCUL), the sector is thriving in Scotland.
These financial co-operatives are eagerly beavering to provide savings schemes, loans and a range of banking services to their members.
Of course it helps to stay focused on this mission when there’s no need to maximise profits – with no external shareholders to please – credit union professionals are fixated on offering the best service to their owner members.
It must be working because they’ve reached an incredible milestone. The latest statistics published by the Bank of England show the assets of credit unions across the UK have hit the £3 billion mark.
The unaudited figures based on quarterly returns from credit unions across the UK as at 30 September 2016, show Scotland’s credit union sector’s assets reached £570 million.
In fact, with 7.2% of the population members of a credit union, Scotland has the fourth highest level of credit union membership in Europe.
Not only does this mean access to an extensive range of services, it also means a wealth of career opportunities for Financial Services pros, from loans specialists and mortgage advisors right through to heads of operations.
With politicians, employers and organisations increasingly keen to support the further development of credit unions, many are now working collaboratively to develop new products and services.
This also underlines the need for fresh recruitment into the world of local banking.
