If you have a head for figures and an eye for detail, the world of finance is calling.
This is a jobs sector that keeps the wheels turning and allows people to plan for every stage of life – and deal with unexpected challenges.
On any day at s1jobs you’ll find opportunities to work in pensions, investments and loans.
It’s also an area that’s proved a rich source of inspiration for writers: some fictional financial firms are more famous than the real thing.
So what can these classic companies of books and the big screen teach us about working in finance?
Fidelity Fiduciary Bank
This stuffy institution is where Mr Banks comes a cropper in Mary Poppins. It turns up too in Saving Mr Banks, which tells the story behind the original novel. Go for a job here and a fresh approach will be needed to outshine its old dinosaurs.
Gringotts Wizarding Bank
You’d need to have spent the last couple of decades living under a rock not to recognise this bank from Harry Potter. With security that includes roller coaster access to the vaults and a fire breathing security system, it scores high on your list if you want to move into security or fraud prevention.
Bailey Building and Loan
James Stewart’s George Bailey has bigger ambitions than to spend his life in a hokey little mortgage company in Bedford Falls, but somehow he never quite manages to break free. Fans of It’s a Wonderful Life – and aspiring mortgage advisers – are grateful for that.
Stratton Oakmont
In the 1990s Jordan Belfort’s brokerage firm was embroiled in corruption that brought it to the attention of the FBI. Under Martin Scorsese’s direction Belfort’s biography became The Wolf of Wall Street. A cautionary tale for anyone wishing to ‘make it big’ in the financial world: hard work not hedonism will win the day.
Duke & Duke
In Trading Places brokerage owners Ralph and Mortimer Duke play fast and loose with the lives of Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd by switching their positions of street bum and successful broker. The results show that with drive and determination anyone can make it in finance.
Scrooge & Marley
This firm of money lenders is not the place to work if you value a good night’s sleep, free from ghostly wailing and rattling of chains. It took a few hauntings, but eventually the anti-hero of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol got the message about the importance of honesty and ethics in banking.
