Aside from VIP tickets for Banarama’s Glasgow gig, what can you put in your CV that will impress employers when you go looking for a new accountancy role on s1jobs?
Yes, it’s good to show you’re a rounded person with many interests, so anything that involves volunteering is helpful.
But how about going the extra mile and a half and getting yourself named as one of the top young accountants of your generation?
That would certainly do the trick . . . so how do you go about it?
Well, you start by entering the Incorporation of Chartered Accountants of Scotland’s annual search for the leading 35 CAs aged under 35.
You don’t need to wait for anyone else to nominate you, you can do it yourself and you have until July to make your application.
Last year this competition attracted a record number of entries from around the world, so you’ll be pitting yourself against the very best young accountants out there.
But don’t let that put you off because there’s room in the contest for all sorts of professionals.
These are the categories the judges will be scrutinising.
Entrepreneurship: Are you a CA who can show a knack for entrepreneurial initiative and use skills to help shape original ideas into a successful reality? Then let’s get going!
Innovation and Technology: Do you have a track record for implementing dramatic change and thrive in an environment of new processes and technologies? Then throw your hat in the ring!
Leadership and Influence: Are you the type who inspires those around you while driving your organisation towards diversity, inclusivity and success? Step on up!
Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility: If you’re a CA dedicated to making a positive impact in business and wider society, get ready for your gong.
There will also be a Global Influence award for a CA who’s made their mark internationally, and a discretionary Chief Executive award will be presented.
Meanwhile the top candidate will be named the ICAS One Young CA 2017.
Last year’s winner, Rimla Akhtar MBE, says: “Being a part of the One Young CA competition has been a fantastic experience: from being in Ottawa for the One Young World conference to meeting some amazing young CAs, to being piped in at an ICAS dinner for the first time.
“I’d encourage all young CAs to nominate themselves and others for this great opportunity.”
So what are you waiting for? Get yourself in the winner’s frame – and, of course, in the picture for all the latest Accountancy vacancies with s1jobs.
