Well versed in the importance of finance

Limericks can often be funny, more often awful but nearly always silly. What they rarely are is focussed on financial services and investment. We do have one however:

The stock market’s a risky affair,

You can be rich if you really have flair.

But this life’s not for me

You must surely agree

As I don’t know my bull from a bear!

It’s debatable into which category this little ditty falls, but surely beyond debate is the big news this week from Limerick itself – and it’s going to be very welcome for anyone working or hoping to work in financial services.

The Irish city is the focus of a new plan by industry giant Northern Trust to boost its 10-year-old presence, increasing its current 1000-strong team by 400 employees over the next five years.

It’s a major investment and underlines the importance of specialisation and innovation in financial services both in Ireland and here at home.

The UK sector employs 1.1 million people – 3.4% of the national workforce – and earns between £190 billion and £205 billion in annual revenues.

According to a report by accountancy giant PwC, on behalf of the City of London, it also contributed £71.4 billion in tax in 2015 to 2016.

This total, which was the highest in the report’s nine-year history, made up an astonishing 11.5% of the UK’s total tax receipts.

It’s no surprise then that, with one weather eye on the forthcoming Brexit negotiations, industry leaders from London and Leeds to Edinburgh and Glasgow are calling for as much clarity and support as possible.

Thankfully, as a leading global hub for investment, banking, pensions and asset servicing, the strength and sustainability of Scotland’s financial services industry in particular is founded on an incredible diversity.

This is reflected by the wide range of opportunities on s1jobs, with roles that vary from investment managers, pension advisers and mortgage administrators to fraud strategy experts, controls accountants and home-based paraplanners.

But before you discover the top roles to suit you, we couldn’t possibly leave you without one more limerick:

If you’re fed up following the mobs

And listening to bosses with big gobs,

Then find a career in finance

And leave nothing to chance
