At s1jobs we love parties. We don’t even need a special occasion as an excuse to celebrate. It might simply be a Fun Time Friday After-Work Get-Together.
However, as we move into that time of the year when companies get ready to host festive soirees and Christmas lunches, not everyone is so keen to put their party hat on.
Believe it or not, for some employees the idea of the traditional office knees-up does not work at all.
As an HR Assistant or Manager, it’s part of the job to ensure every employee feels valued and happy.
So what can you do to prevent party poopers feeling upset?
Get the timing right
Not everyone is able to organise care for kiddies or elderly relatives on a Friday night, especially at this busy time of year. To help them organise their diary and avoid them feeling as though they’re ‘spoiling it for everyone else’ by not attending, make a point of planning as far in advance as you can.
Choose the setting wisely
Karaoke curry nights can be a great way to spice up an evening. But what if even a mild Madras makes Bertha from accounts suddenly feel the wind beneath her wings? Or the idea of being made to sing in front of colleagues leaves young Simon from IT croaking in terror? So that everyone is comfortable offer a range of choices. If there’s no consensus, best go for a traditional lunch without Bertha’s backing tracks.
Safe and easy does it
As with any corporate event, health and safety are priority areas. It’s definitely going to be dark, it could start snowing and there will undoubtedly have been a few brandies poured over the Christmas pudding. This means organising homeward transport in advance is a must, especially for anyone who stays far from the venue.
Be social media savvy
Remember that time the MD thought it would be a really good idea to dress up as a reindeer and kick off a drinking game with the house red? Well, thankfully, neither do his shareholders or the general public because his eagle-eyed HR Assistant asked the restaurant staff not to film him and post it on social media.
