There’s a famous line in an old Kevin Costner movie, Field of Dreams: “If you build it, he will come.”
This is all about our man Kevin creating a baseball field to attract the ghost of a famous player.
While there isn’t much demand in Scotland for baseball diamonds – or for ghosts, come to think of it – the message is still fitting.
Why?
Well, because if you make plans to build, you can rest assured the jobs in construction will come.
And that’s why the end of 2017 has been a time of potential great cheer for bricklayers, scaffolders, electricians, plumbers and many more who are looking to enjoy a lucrative career in the construction industry.
It’s a time when we’ve seen many exciting new projects come online.
These include plans to construct up to 800 homes, shops, a hotel, restaurants and office space at Govan’s Graving Docks in Glasgow.
ZM Architecture and New City Vision unveiled these proposals way back in March but have now moved forward with the submission of a formal planning application.
Their proposal extends the Clyde Walkway and includes a heritage centre, which will narrate the important history of the dockyards.
Further north, the company proposing to redevelop Aberdeen’s Rubislaw Quarry has released brand new images to highlight the full scale of the £68 million project.
Canadian developer Carttera wants to build 300 flats, a gym and a bistro.
There are also plans to host a permanent exhibition, depicting the history of the quarry that helped give the Granite City its name.
In Inverness, meanwhile, there are new plans to build up to 3000 new private and affordable homes.
The Draft Inverness East Development Brief has just been approved by Members of the Highland Council’s City of Inverness Area Committee and will now be published for public consultation.
Finally, Glasgow City Council has just approved a partnership agreement with Scottish Canals and Scottish Water to deliver the £4.7 million North Glasgow Integrated Water Management System.
This system will use the Forth and Clyde Canal and innovative technology to tackle capacity issues often faced by the sewer network in the north of the city.
But that’s not all: the work will also allow for land release for the development of 2500 homes in the area.
