How HR can help attract mature workers

It’s no surprise Granny Ina has begun looking more closely at vacancies on s1jobs.

A report suggests our economy could be boosted by £80 billion every year if we employed as many mature workers as they do in Sweden.

Small_CircularImage_HR_1Grampa Jack is equally happy at the prospect of a return to employment – although we suspect that’s because if Granny Ina gets a new job he can sneak off to his allotment more often.

The Golden Age Index by PwC measures how effectively countries make use of the economic power of workers aged over 55.

Iceland looks cool in the top spot, Sweden came fourth but the UK ranked a lowly 19th out of 34 countries.

There is, however, growing recognition of the value of these workers.

Dr Jill Miller, diversity and inclusion adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, is encouraging employers to make the most of what older and experienced workers have to offer, commenting: “Many have a wealth of knowledge and are at the top of their game. Why wouldn’t we make the most of their talents and engage them to give their best at work?”

HR is, of course, at the heart of making the changes that would allow companies to accommodate their needs.

So, if you’re an HR assistant or manager, what more can you do? And, conversely, if you’re aged over 55 what would entice you back into work, perhaps even in HR itself?

Financial aid

Offering support in the event an employee falls ill can make the decision to join a company much easier for anyone potentially more prone to health problems linked with age.

Health support

Having access to occupational health services will also help lessen potential concerns and allow the HR team to make any necessary adjustments in the workplace.

Flexibility

More flexible working hours and the option of a shorter working week.

Promoted posts

With age come knowledge and experience, both of which are vital for the future growth of any company. As an HR pro you can make the case for mature workers to be considered for senior positions – where their talents are recognised and they can make a real impact.
