Put the pedal to the metal

What turns your life around quicker than a tornado, takes you places faster than a jet fighter and is as sexy as a chocolate truffle smothered in, well, even more chocolate?

Manufacturing_2_smallYes, that’s right: it’s your career.

British supercar creator McLaren is opening the bespoke £50 million Composites Technology Centre in 2019 and plans to create not only a range of exotic sports models but also 200 new jobs.

The facility will see production of advanced Monocell and Monocage carbon tubs, which form the body of every McLaren, in a move that brings back the high-quality and precision work to the UK from Austria.

When the production line is fully up and running, it will create the tubs for the 570S and 720S models, as well as 12 new road stars.

In typically flamboyant style, the facility was christened with a McLaren Senna hypercar doing doughnuts on the newly-laid floor.

Not all manufacturing jobs involve such £750,000 supercars but many can be as exciting and rewarding.

This is, after all, a vast jobs sector, encompassing an incredible array of disciplines and skill sets.

As a production operator, for example, you could find yourself working in the food and drinks industry, or working with textiles, medical devices, pharmaceuticals or electronics.

Right now there are companies all across the country keen to hire enthusiastic workers to boost business, offering excellent opportunities to become part of established workforces.

Among key responsibilities for many operators will be working on a fast paced production line to ensure orders are completed on time and on spec.

In the food and drinks sector, in particular, you must also constantly monitor the workplace to ensure hygiene standards are met.

Depending on your experience you can move on to testing and measuring finished products.

If attention to detail is one of your top skills you could find yourself calibrating delicate machinery, while IT knowledge might see you using cutting-edge computer software to improve efficiency and quality control.

Packaging production operators, meanwhile, make sure everything is logged properly, packed safely and shipped off to customers all over the world.

It may not be a McLaren but can be a supercharged and superfun work environment.
