Weird, wonderful and wacky

Show all Education/Teaching jobs in Scotland

As Scottish students weigh up their further education options, few are probably considering a qualification in The Simpsons or underwater basket weaving.

Education_1_SmallBut there is a dazzling array of wacky courses available and education has never been more varied.

Students can study just about anything or anywhere – and wherever there’s a course there’s an opening for you to become a lecturer, instructor or teacher.

Here’s a rundown of some of the weird and wonderful courses around the globe to help inspire you into a role in education.

Surf science and technology

This Foundation Degree (FDSC) at Cornwall College has to be one the coolest courses on offer anywhere. You won’t spend all your time teaching students to surf. However, as you’ll need to be in the classroom covering the politics of sport, event management, nutrition. You’ll also oversee students designing and building their own surfboards.

Contemporary circus and physical performance

Loved The Greatest Showman? Fancy channelling your inner PT Barnum? There’s no need to run away to the circus – you can teach a three-year course at Bath Spa University, which offers physical acrobatics and aerial training as well as lessons in the history of circus.

Zombies in popular culture

One for The Walking Dead fans. This short course at Columbia College, Chicago, is one to really get your teeth into, guiding students into discussions on the philosophical, historical and theoretical perspectives of the zombie.

Underwater basket weaving

Who knew there was such a thing? Offered at various US universities, it’s perfect if you want to become an aquatic arts and crafts instructor or an aquatic basket engineer. Mm, hmm, really.

Stand-up comedy master’s degree

Lecturers at the University of Kent teach students how to engage an audience and make folks laugh. Try doing that at 9am on a miserable Monday morning in December. They’re also taught how to write their own material and create an on-stage persona for stand-up skits.

The Simpsons and Philosophy

This course at California’s Berkeley University is certainly no TV-watching skive. The class reads works by philosophers including Plato, Marx, and Nietzsche while analysing the culture and philosophy within The Simpsons.

Kanye West and Jay-Z

You wouldn’t want to waste – sorry spend! – three years discussing the merits or otherwise of these two rap stars but they are included in a course at the University of Missouri as part of its African Diaspora Studies degree. Dig out your Watch the Throne album and discuss how artists influence hip-hop culture and the American Dream.
