The benefits of being only human

Technology is a marvel. From touch-screen car windows to foldable smartphones, there is no limit to innovation.

Oil_1_SmallIf you can imagine it, someone out there can probably make it. Just ask Elon Musk, who moves one step closer to landing on Mars every day.

An increasing number of industries are utilising gadgetry and futuristic tech to bolster their business operations and oil and gas is no different.

Take oil giant BP. At their wonderfully named Thunder Horse platform in the Gulf of Mexico, a dog-sized robot – affectionately called Maggie – runs on magnetic tracks to connect pipes from the platform to the sea floor.

Drones are frequently utilised to inspect hard-to-reach equipment high up on floating rigs, while robots have no need to don diving suits to test underwater gear for microscopic metal fractures.

While it may seem robots are taking over the world, there’s still hope for the humble homo sapien.

Let’s take a closer look at the some of the human traits needed for a life in the world of ‘black gold’.

Adaptability

Working in oil and gas is challenging and fast-paced. Here you need to demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly to changing situations right across the board.

Robots can only perform the functions they’re programmed to do, which means they can only ever satisfy expectations.

Humans, of course, can always surpass expectations. Being ambitious and showing initiative is no match for technology.

Perceptiveness

Humans are far more perceptive than machines. When faced with challenges and tasks, not only can we complete those in hand but we can also anticipate any further challenges or issues that might arise.

Being perceptive and responsive is a vital characteristic for oil and gas workers, especially in unpredictable environments such as the North Sea.

Creativity

While we may be no match for the pre-programmed rationality of a robot, only humans can come up with truly creative solutions to complex problems.

People who can think outside the box are always highly valued in the oil and gas industry.

Humanity

There really is no match for human interaction, particularly in an industry where employees often find themselves working in remote locations, with a diverse range of people, or offshore for weeks or months at a time.

Being communicative, empathetic and passionate is always the foundation for a solid career platform.
