Sales_1_SmallBut how do you go about selling dreams?

That’s a tougher gig – and, if you think that working for a hotel group, where weddings make up a large part of your sales targets, will all be about confetti and fizz, then think again.

Selling a wedding isn’t a one-off transaction. You can’t sign off on the deal then move on to the next. You have to stick with the contract until the last crumb of wedding cake has been eaten and the last guest has gone home.

By that time you may have been living with the deal for two years or more and had dozens of meetings, emails and telephone calls with the client over details big and small.

Multiply that by all the couples who will tie the knot in your establishment in the course of the year and this means juggling the expectations and demands of dozens of brides at any one time.

This time of year is peak wedding season – as the celebrations for Harry and Meghan’s nuptials showed – so don’t expect to get a day off until it’s over.

Do you have the stamina, the patience and the eye for detail that it takes to do this job?

It’s not just royal weddings that take excessive amounts of planning – even the smallest nuptials can become a major production and you could find yourself being held responsible for everything from the lack of blossom in the hotel gardens (photograph opportunities) to the weather (photographs again!).

But do the job well and there’s nothing more satisfying than waving a couple off on their honeymoon and knowing you made their big day possible.

So, if you’ve great organisational abilities, a bucket-load of people skills and a fat contacts book full of florists, photographers, owl handlers for delivering the rings (no seriously, that happened), the career possibilities are endless.

Brides talk to brides and, if your professionalism attracts more bookings then, in the hotel business, that makes you solid gold.

Develop a reputation in this area and you’ll have employers queuing up to offer you a position in many different sales sectors.

So do yourself a favour. Make it your business to know where to get the best favours and fascinators and your future in sales will be for better not worse.
