Dundee, Scotland’s fourth largest city, has been named one of the best places in Europe to visit this year by travel guide Lonely Planet. It comes in at number six, nestling alongside Italy’s foodie heartland Emilia-Romagna, Cantabria in Spain, and Greece’s Small Cyclades islands.
The guide praised ‘dynamic’ Dundee for its growing cultural scene and the transformation of the city’s historic waterfront, including the new branch of the V&A, due to open in September.
It’s news that will cheer a whole army of call and contact centre specialists – the travel agents, reservation staff, and tour bookers whose job it is to sell Scotland to the rest of the world.

Festival Dress Code
Locals know how to dress for festivals such as The Fringe in Edinburgh but tourists . . . well, not so much. Advise visitors to pack waterproofs, shorts, fleeces, flip-flops, boots and t-shirts – possibly all to be worn in a single morning.
Magic Castles
Medieval strongholds, cliff-top ruins, haunted tower houses . . . we have the lot. The secret to not getting overload is to choose a couple of favourites, such as Dunvegan on Skye or Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.
Whisky tours
As with castles, it pays not to go mad and try to pack in too much. Whisky is best in moderation but if you do fancy a nip, most of Scotland’s distilleries are sited in the most amazing scenic spots where you can also enjoy a bracing walk.
Peak times
If, for example, your caller wants to go to Skye in July and August, they need to be prepared for it to be busy. They can, however, beat the crowds by being an early bird. Advise them to set the alarm clock early and visit the Fairy Pools before breakfast, enjoy quieter sites during the day then take in a sunset at Elgol.
Midges
Other than dressing in a spacesuit, suggest visitors seek out a midge map if they want to avoid becoming a meal for the wee beasties. At least this will offer guidance on where the worst biting hotspots are and when. Also advise investing in repellent and to keep scratching and swearing to a minimum.
