I spy opportunities in PR

PR is constantly looking ahead, finding new angles for positive press and heading off bad publicity before it even exists.

pr1And on s1jobs there are lots of vacancies where building new skills and embracing new ways of doing things will be essential.

But sometimes the best way to build a career in PR and Marketing is to look to the past.

That’s what Emma Small’s been doing. A graduate from the University of Sutherland, she’s been carrying out an internship at the John Buchan Story Museum in Peebles.

It’s here she developed an exhibition into Buchan’s wartime propaganda campaign.

Buchan was the original PR man, a storyteller who during WW1 used his abilities to help Britain’s war effort. He is best known for his novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, but during the dark days of conflict he was also Director of Information.

This was a top-secret role that involved managing the flow of news from the battlefields and encouraging the public to carry on supporting the military campaign when the going got tough.

It’s a role that lay half way between spin doctor and spy and helped to lay the foundations for the modern PR industry.

Emma’s internship was arranged through the University’s Graduate Internships Scheme, which is a paid work experience programme offered by employers to students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field.

Emma, who is 22, says: “I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. It was interesting to put the skills I’d learned in my degree to the test. Despite most of the information about John Buchan’s time as Director of Intelligence being lost due to the nature of his work, we were still able to uncover surprising details about the type of work he undertook.

“I feel I’ve gained valuable skills that better prepare me for future job opportunities.”

“I’d definitely recommend an internship to graduates. It gives you the opportunity to develop the skills you learned during your degree. In my own experience I was able to work and manage my own project that gave me the confidence I need to develop my career.”

If you want to develop your own career in PR, you don’t have to be a super agent like John Buchan.
