Personal Assistants are invaluable members of staff in businesses all across the planet.
You only have to look at Joan from Mad Men, the inimitable Miss Moneypenny from the Bond movies, or even Smithers, the tormented assistant to Mr Burns in The Simpsons, to get the gist of just how vital a PA really is.
And their mission is not just the smooth delivery of daily business matters. With great responsibility come even greater demands, sometimes ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Let’s take a look at some of the mind-boggling candidate criteria that have been asked of PAs, Admins and Secretaries that are definitely outwith the normal job description.
Mission impossible
A couple in San Francisco were seeking the impossible when their over-the-top ad for a PA went viral.
As well as providing a peculiar list of quirks and attributes their desired PA should possess (must be ‘bohemian chic but also minimalistic modern’), the couple went on to insist the perfect candidate must be multilingual, like Game of Thrones, enjoy giving manicures and pedicures, be an expert chef, have experience with high-maintenance dogs, be willing to drink only five alcoholic beverages per week and be well trained in several self-defence fighting styles. Phew!
Oh, and they also asked that an hour-by-hour daily schedule be adhered to. At just $25 per hour, that’s a big ask.
Believe us, the excellent Admin roles on s1jobs never include such outrageous demands – and the rewards are often a lot bigger.
Wake up and smell the coffee!
When Brian Daniel lifted the lid on what being a personal secretary to the stars really involved it made for truly entertaining reading.
As well as being on call 24/7, 365 days a year including Christmas Day, and being able to answer multiple phone calls simultaneously, he also recalled some of the more extravagant duties he had to perform – such as arranging private jet transportation . . . for a particular type of coffee.
Rest assured the modern PA may occasionally make coffee but you will never be expected to fly it in first-class!
