Jobs that are out of this world

Show all Hospitality, Catering and Tourism jobs across Scotland

10, 9, 8, 7, 6 . . . yes, the final countdown has begun and the A’Mhoine peninsula in Sutherland looks set to launch itself as the UK’s first departure lounge for space travel.

Hospitality_2This is a sector that could be worth almost £4 billion to the UK’s economy.

And while space tourists will be able to reach for the stars – or at least a quick whirl around the planet – visitors to Scotland could also enjoy the weekly spectacle of space rockets launching into the night sky.

If you, too, have a dream of enjoying an out-of-this-world job in tourism, here are roles that don’t require NASA training or a spacesuit.

Virtual Reality Host

Glasgow-based Geekzonia was recently recruiting for a Virtual Reality Events Host. The successful candidate will be hired to meet and greet game players and help with event planning in the world of virtual reality (VR).

With VR becoming such an integral part of Scotland’s tourism marketing machinery, this kind of role is going to be increasingly popular.

Airline crew

Okay, so technically you’re still in the Earth’s atmosphere but few jobs are guaranteed to make you such a high flier.

Cabin crew not only travel the world but their sky-high customer service skills can easily be transferred to many jobs sectors.

Emirates was just the latest airline to hold a recruitment drive in Scotland this summer, with an open day in Glasgow seeking crew for its Edinburgh to Dubai connection.

Diving instructor

The ocean really is a different world. And if you fancy helping visitors swim with basking sharks and dolphins off the west coast of Scotland or go wreck diving in sea lochs, there are courses to help you earn your flippers.

And did you know a Scottish Marine Recreation and Tourism Survey estimates marine tourism is now worth £3.7 billion a year to Scotland’s economy?

Tour guide

You may still be on planet earth but as a guide to Scotland’s historic cathedrals, castles and cobbled city streets you’ll transport visitors back in time and to another world entirely.

And what could be better than being paid to show time travellers their way around Scotland? You’ll be able to indulge your love of history, architecture and culture while being paid for the pleasure.
