This traditionally macho industry is pushing ahead with an equal opportunities agenda that’s the envy of other sectors.
In its most recent move to stamp out sexism, the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) has appointed three women to its board of governance.
Every one of them has an impressive track record of working at the highest level within the business.
John Forster, CSIC Board Chair, says: “CSIC is on a mission to drive innovation across the Scottish construction industry, so we’re extremely proud to have attracted such an outstanding group of new members with global reputations to our board who will help us achieve this.”

Alison Watson MBE
Alison, who’s pictured here, is the co-founder and CEO at Class of Your Own. Since 2009 this organisation has helped young people and their teachers to recognise the wide range of technical and professional careers available to them in construction, architecture and engineering.
She actively works with leading industry partners to provide recognised progression routes into work experience and skilled apprenticeships, as well as further and higher education.
If you’re planning a career in construction, she’s the perfect mentor.
Sara Thiam
Sara is Director for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in Scotland. She’s also a member of Scottish Council for Development and Industry’s policy committee and former chair of the Low Carbon Infrastructure Task Force.
She also has more than 25 years of experience in project management, policy and public affairs.
These include the Glasgow Edinburgh Collaboration Initiative, Edinburgh City Centre development partnership and EU-funded projects to stimulate innovation in the built environment. A role model to be proud of.
Jeanette MacIntyre
Jeanette first qualified in Interior Design from Napier University and completed the Graduate Enterprise course run by Scottish Enterprise at Stirling University before setting up her first company.
She then joined the Interiors Division of Tarmac Construction in 1987. She has also worked with the government’s Property Services Agency on a number of public buildings where she helped refurbish Scottish Courts, Customs and Excise, Benefits Agency and Military Centres.
In 1993 she became one of the founding directors of Zenith Contract Interiors, a design and all trades fitting-out company. Now known as Indeglas, she is its MD and working in a specialist sector of construction.
