Job hunting in production and manufacturing is a bit like fishing. You get the odd hopeful bite, some near misses, and a few ones that got away . . . before landing the biggie.
And just as anglers sometimes use two or three rods to increase their chances of success, job hunters quite often apply for multiple roles at the same time, hoping to hook at least one.
But it can be a tricky business juggling several job applications, more so if you employ the ‘spray and pray’ method of sending out gazillions of CVs in the hope of getting a sniff of at least something.
Just as an angler wouldn’t blindly cast a line without using the correct lure, job hunters with a how-to-hook-’em strategy are more likely to increase their chances of an employer biting. Here’s how to do it.

Set out your specifications
Decide on some job-seeking parameters midway between ‘my perfect job’ of factory manager and ‘I’ll take anything’ in assembly operations. By acting as your own personal recruitment consultant you’ll sift the wheat from the chaff, only applying for roles where you have a genuine interest.
Don’t be a desperado
CV carpet-bombing can backfire, especially if you’re applying on s1jobs for positions with the same company without realising it. It pays to read every job description in full before you start applying.
Pay attention
If you’re sending out several CVs at once, each of them needs to be tailored to suit. Your personal details stay the same but take note of desirable qualities listed in each posting and reflect them in your CV. It’s going to mean more work but you have more of a chance of it paying off this way. Applicant tracking software means key words relating to skills, experience and aptitudes need to be singled out.
Same company, different job
If you have your eye on a particular organisation, such as a well-known manufacturing company, don’t be put off applying for multiple jobs, especially if they are in a similar field as it will make you appear keen. However, don’t overdo it or try for more than three posts at once as you’ll be tipping into desperation territory.
Hitting the jackpot
If you strike lucky and end up with multiple job offers, remember to keep all your potential employers interested until you make up your mind. Don’t go radio silent on your second choice and try to make your decision within a few days – delays could be perceived as a lack of interest.
