Strathclyde University is earning a top-notch reputation . . . and not just as a prestigious centre of learning.
Last month the Glasgow institution cemented its status as one of Scotland’s best employers by announcing a new scheme to provide Student Union staff with a free taxi-ride home after shifts that finish outwith public transport hours.
This makes the University the first employer in the city to fulfill all of the conditions of Hospitality Charter outlined by the Scottish Trade Unions Congress (STUC) and Unite, which aims to improve the rights of the 256,000 hospitality workers in the country.

Working in the hospitality sector you’ll find there are always perks with the right employer, including . . .
Tips
These wonderful wee financial boosts can make the job extra rewarding. Sadly, not every employer allows their staff to keep 100% of their tips but, with this now a stipulation of the Fair Hospitality Charter, more employers are coming round.
What could be nicer than a boost to your income at the end of a shift?
Employee Discounts
Every employer has different rules and regulations when it comes to discounts on food and beverage but nearly all offer some form of reward for hard-working staff.
From free staff meals to food vouchers to mates’ rates accommodation, the best hospitality employers are always willing to attract and retain service superheroes.
Flexible working
Working 9-5, what a way to make a living! Yes, Dolly Parton called it. Not everyone likes the idea of a Monday to Friday working week – which is why the hospitality sector can be so rewarding.
Late starts, early finishes, alternating shift patterns, flexible scheduling and some mid-week respite from the world of work are just some of the benefits of working in hospitality and catering.
Buddy up with co-workers and you might find last-minute shift swaps are possible too.
On the job training
Regardless of which area of hospitality you work in, there are opportunities to develop new skills and learn on the job.
From health and safety courses to sommelier training to barista schools and cocktail making, the best employers are willing to invest in talented, dedicated staff.
Many of the learning opportunities are transferable too and will look great on your CV.
