The key to a great career

It’s fair to say housing jobs never make it on to those ‘hot career’ lists published from time to time. Who’s ever seen a housing officer sandwiched between a pilot, spy or movie star?

social 1This is a shame because, although the sector itself may not seem sexy, it’s certainly an exciting place to be.

Just as a home is much more than four walls and a roof, today’s housing sector is far more than working with bricks and mortar.

It’s about helping improve people’s chances in life and creating an environment in which they can flourish.

The rise of social housing has seen a shift from simply providing homes to creating neighbourhoods and developing communities . . . and that growth means more employment opportunities.

If you haven’t considered a career in housing before, why not look at some of the opportunities on s1jobs?

And, if you need more persuading, here are some things to mull over.

Putting people first

People are at the heart of housing and you’ll get to meet and work with a wide range. As a housing officer, you’ll be dealing with tenants often facing difficult and challenging situations.

As a housing manager you might be working in partnership with the police, social services and probation service.

Making a difference

Helping someone to secure and maintain a roof over their head is hugely rewarding. Similarly, supporting vulnerable people within a community fosters a huge sense of satisfaction and pride.

Alternative to social work

Housing can be a great career choice for anyone who’s decided against the social work route. It offers the satisfaction of assisting the vulnerable – young people, elderly, refugees, abuse victims – in one aspect of their lives rather than juggling several as is necessary in social work.

Be at the start of something

Working in housing regeneration is an exciting prospect, especially if you’re developing sustainable communities from the ground up. A typical role is a community development officer who’s responsible for securing grant funding and building partnerships with stakeholders.

A diverse sector

Housing jobs range from being very hands-on (housing officer) to behind-the-scenes (policy advisor), with an awful lot in between (plumbers, finance, HR, IT and marketing). There’s something to suit every kind of skill set and personality.
