How to become a warehouse operative

Logistics. For a small word it covers a remarkably huge jobs sector. Essentially, logistics is all about transporting goods to customers.

This can involve a complex supply chain of trains and planes, boats and barges, and HGVs and vans that stretches from Scotland’s manufacturing centres all across the globe  . . . but there will always be one very important link: the warehouse.

And housed in this building is an elite squad: the warehouse operators.

Working behind the scenes, their daily mission to sort what comes in and send it back out is too incredibly varied to list in full.

It can involve making sure farm produce is shipped out fresh so supermarket shelves are stocked or guaranteeing electrical items arrive at offices intact and working.

Up until this month, of course, many have also been busy ensuring gifts were reindeered out in time for that special day.

If you like the idea of joining this crack squad of professionals, there are plenty of opportunities to grab top warehouse roles with s1jobs.

While there are normally no set entry requirements – though skills in English, Maths and IT are helpful – there are some core skills you do need to have, or be prepared to learn on the job, before beginning full service.

Stay safe

Because it’s a fast paced environment, often with heavy items and moving machinery, there are strict guidelines to learn about health and safety. Depending on the products being handled, you may also have to monitor loading weights and storage temperatures.

Stay fit

Think of the warehouse as your personal gym: you don’t need to be a superfast athlete or a bodybuilder with thighs of steel but reasonable levels of fitness and stamina are needed for sorting, packing and lifting.

Stay focussed

When you’re working against deadlines and the volume of goods passing through is growing by the second, it’s important you can stay calm and pay attention to details. Show, too, that you can keep excellent stock records and you could be upskilled – learning the latest stock management software and training fellow operatives in IT and operation techniques.

Stay keen

If you’re aiming to grow your career, and show enthusiasm and a tireless work ethos, you could find yourself moving from the ladder to the top shelves to the one that brings you to the top positions, such as shift supervisor or warehouse manager.
