The best time of year to be in retail

The countdown has begun to the biggest shopping day of the year. Black Friday is on its way and, if industry pundits are to be believed, this year’s super-sales day is set to be the biggest yet.

Retail_1_smallPredictions are that on November 27 more than £1 billion will be spent online and at the tills . . . and then hot on its heels will come the pre-Christmas rush and the Boxing Day sales.

There’s simply no escaping these seismic events.

If you are a sharp operator, however, you’ll already be limbering up, ready to capitalise on the opportunities created by the demand for seasonal staff, with shouts out already for Stock Assistants and Sales Assistants.

And, if you are already enjoying a sales role in Retail but looking to the next step to Store Manager, you may be rubbing your hands at the opportunities to shine – and the size of the bonus you’ll have made by the time New Year rolls around.

True, you might also be rubbing your poor tootsies after a festive season spent on your feet, but it’ll be worth it when your pay cheque lands with a welcome thud in the bank.

There are hundreds of great Retail vacancies on offer. Among them are positions to help cope with the festive rush, others are permanent jobs where you’ve a chance to really boost your earnings at Christmas.

What better way to increase your take-home pay as a Cosmetics Manager in a leading department store than by selling beautifully wrapped gift packages full of fragrances and body lotions to blokes who leave it until Christmas Eve to buy a present for their beloved Gertie or Gary?

Now say after me: “You’ll want the luxury box, with fragrance, body products and matching weekend bag, won’t you sir?”

Yes, it’s the ancient art of upselling – the skill of adding one purchase on top of another until you finally wave the customer out of the doors staggering under the weight of their shopping bags.

It’s what great retail staff do anyway, but they know there’s no time like Christmas for making every transaction count.

Not everyone has this kind of front for front of house, of course.

If you are more an organiser or a back-room boffin, then you might consider a job as a Stock Assistant or even an Area Manager, both of whose roles it is to ensure that the right products are always on the shelves.

Or how about working as a Retail Stock Counter, helping to carry out audits of what stock remains unsold after the big rush?

On s1jobs you’ll find vacancies across the range of the Retail industry and, while you don’t need the red-nosed energy of Rudolph,  most of them demand enthusiasm and a get-up-and-go attitude as a matter of course.

Those who love retailing say this time of year is like being in showbusiness: a great big pantomime  . . . and until the rush is behind you, oh, yes it is!
