Be brave: look to the future

If you work in construction today, you aren’t just building offices, homes and schools. You’re at the forefront of efforts to make Scotland a more sustainable country.

construction1Innovative construction methods, coupled with new standards being set by Scottish Government and local authorities, are rapidly improving the energy efficiency of new buildings.

But it’s not just efficiency levels that have been given a serious makeover. New homes are being designed with flexibility built-in so they can change with the growing needs of families or be easily adapted for anyone with mobility issues.

This kind of long-term thinking is helping to make construction an exciting career choice and there are opportunities all across the sector on s1jobs.

Whether it’s helping to build smart motorways, installing green energy systems or fitting new forms of insulation, construction roles are becoming more varied all the time and are transforming the ways in which we all live.

It’s not only the big projects making a difference. In remote and rural communities across Scotland, construction work is underway that’s having a direct impact on the people who live there.

Old schools, redundant Pierhead buildings and other neglected properties are being given a new lease of life, thanks to grants given out by the Scottish Land Fund, which helps towns and villages to buy community assets.

Put the roof on a former barn that’s now destined to be a meeting place for locals and offer facilities for tourists and you are helping to strengthen some of the country’s most fragile communities.

Turn a run-down church hall into a hub, with a cafe, library and GP’s surgery all sharing the same space, and you could help an island attract newcomers and make it more viable for current residents to continue living there.

Similar projects are also taking place in urban areas where they are strengthening links between local residents and putting the heart back into what were run-down streets.

But none of this would be possible, if it wasn’t for people with practical construction and trades skills.

Whether you are a time-served tradesperson, a young apprentice or a senior project manager, you’ve an important part to play in building the future of the country.
