The fashion world has lost an icon with the passing of designer Karl Lagerfeld.

But it’s his will that might be his most famous legacy, with his beloved cat Choupette said to be in line to inherit his £150 million fortune.

You, too, can be the cat that gets the cream – if you’ve an eye on a starring role in fashion, landing a retail job from the vacancies on s1jobs could mean the start of a hot career in haute couture.

Clothes shopping can be a risky business and the paying public needs you: a sales assistant with an in-depth knowledge of fashion, an eye for what works for customers and a way to tell it straight without insulting anyone.

The world of fashion is constantly changing and so fashionistas must keep up with trends – or, better, stay ahead of the curves.

When a customer isn’t sure what they want or what’s on offer, having the answers makes you a go-to guru.

As well as offering advice on the practicalities, such as size and shade options, savvy sales assistants are often entrusted with helping to style clients.

This means if you want to work in a top fashion store you need to know your Gabor from your Gucci – and which brand is the best fit for Gladioli Feefeepops or Granny Ina.

It helps, of course, to have a personal interest in all things a la mode, as well as an unflappable nature.

After all, being a sounding board for customers isn’t always easy: how do you suggest to a customer that an A-line Cut dress might be a better choice than a PVC mini without sounding judgemental or, worse, causing offence?

While every body shape and size deserves to be proudly shown off, it takes tact and diplomacy to call out potential fashion faux pas without completely cramping a customer’s style and personality.

Not all your interactions will be with real people. Visual merchandising is important in fashion and you could be responsible for ensuring displays and mannequins are ab fab attired in the freshest threads.

This allows you to get creative and develop your style skills. But if ever you come unstuck, remember Karl’s advice: “Chic is a kind of mayonnaise: either it tastes, or it doesn’t.”

No we’re not sure how this helps either but it will give you something to think about as you look for that feather boa.
