The comeback kid is back in the ring

Whenever you think this industry is finally about to retire and hang up its gloves, news comes of another full-on fightback.

Small_Oil_2This month has been no different, with Scotland’s oil and gas industry announcing a stout defence of its title as undefeated champion.

BP was first out of its corner, revealing it expects to double production in the North Sea.

Announcing two new oil and gas discoveries in the central North Sea and west of Shetland, which were first drilled last year, it confirmed evaluation and interpretation of the well results is ongoing to assess future options.

Regional President Mark Thomas noted these are exciting times for the company in the North Sea as it lays the foundations of a refreshed and revitalised business.

He added the company expects to double production to 200,000 barrels a day by 2020 and keep producing beyond 2050.

Now everyone likes double helpings and when it comes to landing a new job having a sector that’s experiencing upsizing is always going to go down a treat.

Of course, the breadth of opportunities available in oil and gas has always made other job sectors look like lightweights.

But with this sharpened focus on exploration and the opening up of brand new fields, what has been a recruitment area that has been dieting in recent years could well see some serious beefing up.

This is much more than simply boosting the number of frontline roles in exploration and production.

Because this is a sector that embraces transferable skills, an accountant could just as easily find themselves in a role taking care of project budgets, while lawyers will be getting down to the nitty gritty of agreeing contracts.

HR professionals, too, will play a vital role in overseeing recruitment and overseeing bespoke arrangements for the army of employees that is needed to get the black stuff from source to end user.

And let’s not forget the important staff who service on-shore facilities. Besides fuel tanker and HGV drivers, there are also crane operators, dockworkers, logistics experts and teams of admin staff.

All of these workers will be using smartphones, tablets, computers that require software and hardware engineers.

With the main event nearing and the entire industry getting ready to rumble, will you get in the ring with a new role in Oil & Gas from s1jobs?
