Today s1jobs would like to salute the heroes of our communities: the workers who make our society extra special.
And where better to look for a first class service than among postal workers? Come rain or shine, sleet or snow, posties are a dedicated bunch who always make sure we get our Christmas cards – and bills, alas! – on time.
Undeterred by adverse weather and even the occasional grumpy customer or barking pet, their role is vital as they can often be an important lifeline to the outside world for the vulnerable or elderly.
Neighbourhood posties often work the same route every day and this means they have the chance to build a strong rapport with their customers, often stopping for a friendly chat and making sure everything is okay with those who might need a little extra help in life.
Make time for your postie and they’re certain to go the extra mile for you.
Much like posties, delivery drivers are tasked with making sure we get our packages, big and small, at the designated time and hopefully in one piece.
With the huge upsurge in online shopping and next day delivery promises, that’s no mean feat!
Always busy and often working to tight schedules, they go above and beyond to ensure customers are happy.
This can include helping to find the perfect place to unload larger loads, storing packages in a secure place if we’re out or even helping unpack those eagerly anticipated appliances, furniture or electrical equipment.
Of course, no-one is more important in the delivery of goodwill to the community than the social care workers traditionally known as Home Helpers.
These home help heroes typically have a caseload of clients they visit on a daily basis and their mission involves a whole host of duties: personal care, shopping, cleaning, arranging medication and, perhaps most crucially, providing support and comfort. These everyday angels – who must be trustworthy, approachable and sympathetic to the needs of others – are always on hand to lend an ear, chew the fat or pop the kettle on.
It’s not always easy to establish a tight-knit community but it helps when you have a beautiful space to maintain as this creates a common focus that binds residents together.
That’s why gardeners and landscapers – either private, employed by a council or contracted by a land management company – are so instrumental in creating a great green space we can all be proud of. From planting flowers to strimming grass to pruning hedges, their role in the community should never be underestimated.
It’s their creativity and dedication to the natural environment that ensures we have fresh buds and blossoms in the spring and open, green spaces to enjoy together all year round.
Finally, let’s hear it for the refuse collectors of this land! They are of paramount importance to every single community across the UK. Without them, we’d be a very messy lot indeed and our lives could quickly descend into chaos and misery. From removing our household waste to ensuring we’ve followed the recycling rules, it’s a physical job that doesn’t always get the credit it deserves.
The best of the best work quickly to minimise disruption, leave no trace behind and can often be seen helping the elderly or less able with their wheelie bins.
