While your ability with the written word isn’t a core skill in the construction or trades industry, it still pays to take the time to perfect your construction & trades cover letter. Think of this as a great chance to highlight secondary skills, as well as highlighting what makes you the best person for an employer to turn to.
What to include in a Construction & Trades Cover Letter:
Mention your core skills.
Manual professions need clear examples of the skills you have in order to have faith in your abilities. It’s best to do this in the first paragraph of your cover letter. You can also think about pulling this out as a bullet point list for ease.
Quantify your achievements.
Using hard numbers to show your past successes is a good way to stand out to employers. For example, something like “Experience overseeing 10 construction projects” looks a lot better than just “experience in overseeing projects”.
Tell them why you want this specific job.
If there are specific parts of the project which excite you, or you feel you can lend some serious expertise to, mention them. Employers will be grateful to see you took the time to understand the position better. It also gives them clear evidence of how you might be an asset to them.
The best kind of template:
A cover letter for the construction industry needs to be practical. Make it short, sharp and to the point. While design shouldn’t be overlooked altogether, it’s important to focus more on what’s being said than how it appears on the page.
