All across Scotland, lawyers, sheriffs, court officers and other legal professionals turn up for work every day to deliver modern justice in thoroughly old-fashioned premises.
If you’re one of them, you’ll know the limitations of working in buildings designed by Victorian architects to inspire fear in everyone who walked through their doors.
But as times change so do ideas about how we should treat those who come into contact with the law, for better or worse.

And those ideas are now taking on a solid shape in Inverness, where Scotland’s first purpose-built Justice Centre is currently under construction.
There’s a year’s work left to do on-site but by this time in 2019 the doors will open on the most modern court in the country, with space for trials as well as a range of justice and support organisations providing integrated facilities for victims, witnesses and litigants.
Specialist facilities for children and young people are incorporated into the building’s design and the civil courts and tribunal spaces will be on a separate floor from the courts where criminal trials are held.
The six new courtrooms will incorporate the latest digital technologies and there will be separate areas for jurors, witnesses and the local faculty – a distinct improvement of the jumble of people from all sides who have to share space in old courts across Scotland.
But it isn’t only the spacious facilities that will make these new courts different.
The aim is to have the entire service work better when everyone who has a stake in prosecuting wrongdoers and providing justice for victims is under the same roof.
The new Justice Centre will provide space for a whole range of organisations, including Citizens’ Advice, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, NHS Highland, Police Scotland and Scottish Women’s Aid.
