In customer service it’s your job to make others feel happy again when their Fuggler hasn’t yet turned up for Davey Junior’s Christmas or the boiler conks out on Boxing Day.
But who do you turn to when life throws so many banana skins under your feet, it’s slippier than being a contestant than Dancing on Ice?
Stress is a common factor in many jobs but in customer service you may not even realise your wellbeing is at risk. Sometimes you need to take a step back, a big breath and a little action.

Thankfully, there are simple ways to manage concerns and anxieties and shake off any pressure in the job.
Talk
Even if your best friend isn’t a budgie, talk is cheap. In fact, it’s free. And sometimes all you need is an ear.
That said, it can be difficult to open up to a fellow co-worker, so pick a time during your break to phone your partner or best friend and talk to them for as long as it takes to feel more positive.
They can even give you some feedback on that day’s challenges from an outsider’s perspective.
Exercise
One of the best ways to relieve worry is to exercise. Perhaps your work rota means you can fit in a training session before or after a shift, whether that’s a run on the treadmill or a quick dip in the pool?
For extra stress relief, don boxing gloves and take out your frustrations on the gym punch bag . . . you’re guaranteed to feel better.
But don’t just exercise once. Make this regular to keep those cortisol levels under control.
Find a hobby
Okay, so not everyone finds crochet therapeutic or bob sleighing a fun night out. But the last thing anyone in customer service wants is for their career to be their whole life – when it becomes your only focus, that’s when stress can kick in.
Hobbies such as painting, creative writing, gardening or playing an instrument can all be calming and constructive.
Talk to a professional
Sometimes talking to a pro is the best remedy. There’s absolutely no shame or stigma in this. Many, many people see therapists for career-related stress. They’re in a safe place where they can open up and receive great advice to help find healthy coping mechanisms.
