Calling all night owls! If you don’t give a hoot about working hard while the rest of us are tucked up in our beds, there are openings on s1jobs that are just right for you.

In our 24-hour-on world, companies can no longer switch the lights off at 6pm and pack up for the day.

Small_Call_2Instead they continue to do business right through the night and they need people they can rely on to be bright and alert in the small hours.

It may not be everyone’s cup of hot cocoa, but for some night shift is a more enticing proposition than trying to drag themselves out of bed at 7.30am.

If you’ve always wondered why you’ve struggled to wake up in the mornings but have no problem staying up all night, you’ve got your ancestors to thank for your back-to-front sleep pattern.

New studies now suggest in early societies it was beneficial to have a few tribe members wide awake during the night to stoke the fires and keep the wild beasts at bay. This staggered sleep routine is still encoded into our DNA today and the best way of dealing with it if have the night time wide-awake gene, is to find a job that allows you to work to this strength.

Clare Hopkins has been on the night team with a major bank for two years and she’s got no problems dealing with customer queries at 2am.

“A few nights ago I was helping a customer whose transfer of funds had gone badly wrong. It was all down to a coding error and I was able to alert the branch who then fixed the problem before 9.30am the next day.

“I love working night shifts. My commute takes half the time it would during normal working hours and on my way home I’ve seen some beautiful sunrises.

“It can play havoc with your social life, so you have to be organised and sort out the rota so you’re off on important dates, but otherwise there are few drawbacks.”

Working alongside Clare are a number of parents for whom nightshift has allowed them to get back into the workplace.

There are other benefits too.

“People tend to tell you more in the early hours of the morning than they would at other times so it’s a privilege to be able to help them,” says Clare. “Quite often, after you’ve sorted out an issue, customers will tell you they can now get a good night’s sleep!”
