Ensure a first-class delivery

Special delivery! It’s always nice to come home and find the postie has dropped off that parcel you’ve been eagerly awaiting. But arrivals in Milton Keynes are about to become even more special with the introduction of the world’s first robot delivery service.

it1Starship Technologies have chosen the location for the full-scale rollout of their automated robots, equipped with ultrasonic sensors, cameras, radar and GPS. Customers unlock the robots to access their parcels enter a unique code so security is guaranteed.

Of course there are many other sectors where robots are now being employed . . . and it takes an army of IT pros to make all of this wizardry possible.

Grub’s up!

In Japan, China, Malaysia and Dubai, robots are infiltrating the food service industry as hi-tech servers. Diners order their dishes via a tablet with a direct link to the kitchen.

Chefs work their magic before the robots deliver meals on built-in serving trays.

Ensuring smooth operations and no spills is all down to the skills of robotics engineers, responsible for designing, building and developing.

Much like a human parent, the engineer is always on-hand to help fix glitches and tweak software in their robot baby.

What’s up doc?

Robots are increasingly being used in the world of healthcare. As well as transporting medicines and supplies, they even assist and perform surgical procedures.

The most common robotic surgical system is a mechanical arm with instruments attached. Surgeons control the movement of the arm via a computer situated close to the operating table.

The system provides a 3-D high-definition view of the surgical site, which allows optimal precision for controlling and manipulating the robotic arm.

And who takes care of the robots? Robotics technicians, of course, who are responsible for the repair and maintenance of machinery and software.

Search and rescue

American company Boston Dynamics are at the forefront of humanoid robotics development. Atlas, their 1.5-metre tall humanoid, is so advanced it can even maintain its balance when jostled.

It’s no surprise the imposing bot is being drafted in to help assist with search and rescue missions.

Of course, ensuring such a hero operates to its optimum capabilities requires hi-tech software programming. Software engineers and developers are responsible for ensuring the internal operating systems are coded to perfection.

While it may seem robots are taking over the world, it’s actually the clever clogs behind the technology who hold all the power!
