As another year begins how are you going to set about achieving your professional goals this year? Why not start by making some personal resolutions?
What keeps you at the top in the legal profession isn’t just knowledge of the law, analytical skills and attention to detail, it also takes stamina and a well-nourished brain.
Exercise keeps the mind sharp, as well as flooding it with endorphins that help you to remain positive in the face of an overwhelming workload and tricky legal puzzles.
But going to the gym will only take you so far, because it also takes fresh air and nature to enable you to get the most from your efforts.

Then there is the challenge of trying something new. Stimulation helps the brain to work in new ways, making it stronger and more creative.
Here are some ideas for exciting and new physical challenges for you to try out in the months ahead.
Wild Swimming
Leave heated pools behind and dip your toe into a sport that’s rapidly gaining advocates (yes, both kinds!).
Regular immersion in cold water has been shown to have all sorts of mental and physical benefits and there are beautiful rivers, pools and beaches around Scotland where you can frolic with otters, wallow in the waves and experience the true power of nature.
Trail Riding
Scotland is crisscrossed by hundreds of drovers’ roads, green ways and Roman routes that offer traffic-free trails where riders can enjoy the countryside from the saddle.
The horses themselves set the pace, which forces you to slow down and pay attention to the glorious surroundings.
It’s an ideal way to switch off and recharge your brain far from tedious legal tomes and crowded courts.
Long Distance Walks
The John Muir Way, which meanders 134 miles from Helensburgh on the west coast to Dunbar on the shores of the North Sea, is the latest long distance route to be signposted in Scotland.
But why walk it when you can run at least part of the way?
Every year the annual John Muir Way Ultra Marathon sees runners compete a 50-mile section from Port Seton to Dunbar.
You’ve less then three months until the starting pistol is fired this year on March 30, so best get up from your office chair and boost your brain and legal career with some high-intensity training.
