Fast track your way into marketing

Universities and colleges that have been quiet over the summer will soon switch back into busy mode as students return to continue their studies.

Among them will be Ellie Henderson who, after two years spent studying for an HND while holding down a full-time job, has now accepted an offer to join the third year of a Fashion Marketing degree course.

Small_PR_Marketing_1“I’ve always been interested in fashion, but working for a High Street clothing chain gave me completely new insights into the industry and let me see how important marketing is to the success of a brand,” she says.

This is a blend of learning and on-the-job experience that can make for the perfect all-rounder in marketing.

And marketing matters – which is why colleges and universities across Scotland offer degrees and diplomas in the subject, some with added specialities such as brand management, languages and international business studies.

If you already work in marketing – or maybe you’re doing something else and want to switch track with a top role form s1jobs – check out the postgraduate courses that can bring you up to speed and provide you with a solid qualification.

Without an in-depth knowledge, marketing is one of those areas that can be hard to define. It rubs shoulders with advertising and PR but it’s not the same as either.

To do it well you need to be cool with technical systems and social media, but not overlook the impact of tried-and-tested ways of getting your message out there, including leaflets and billboards.

If you work in marketing for an international brand, you could find yourself juggling multiple strategies for different parts of the world, cutting deals with other global names for joint promotions.

Do the same job for a small events company and your marketing strategy might involve tying strawboards to lampposts.

What matters wherever you work is that you’ve correctly identified your potential customers and developed creative ways of getting their attention.

If you want a qualification you can take to employers on s1jobs, there’s still time to gain a place on any of this year’s courses not yet fully subscribed.

Of course, you don’t always need a degree or diploma to get started in marketing. There are many routes into this lucrative career sector.
