Shipbuilding, engineering, whisky and banking have all been major drivers of the Scottish economy.
Now there is a new-ish kid on the block that is hungry for talented people just like you.
Yes, if you’re looking for Scotland’s fastest growing sector, then it’s official: welcome to the wonderful world of digital tech.
Research published by Skills Development Scotland shows that the sector is set to expand twice as fast as the overall economy in Scotland in the years to 2024. That’s even faster than Grampa Jack’s waistband after Christmas lunch!
The number of tech businesses rose by a staggering 53% between 2010 and 2015. That’s almost three times as fast as Scottish businesses in general, which rose by 19%.
Of course, the faster it grows, the more Scotland’s reputation as a centre of excellence spreads . . . and so the sector grows even more. Success breeds success, as someone very successful once said.
So, if you are looking for a new opportunity, this is a great area of work to be getting into right now.
You don’t even need to be a techy to get a piece of the action. There are more than 60,000 people employed in tech businesses in Scotland. Of these 60% are doing pure tech roles while 40% are employed in non-technical roles.
Looking across the economy as a whole there are a total of 90,000 people employed in tech roles so that includes people in technical jobs in sectors as diverse as healthcare and the arts.
If you think that sounds good, the future is even brighter; the Scottish Government’s Digital Strategy states that it aims to increase the number of people in digital technology roles to 150,000 by 2021.
As you would probably expect, the jobs hotspots are Glasgow and Edinburgh but West Lothian is also home the third largest concentration of tech jobs in the country.
It is estimated that Scotland has almost 12,800 new tech jobs created every year.
So, if you want to be part of Scotland’s fast-moving digital revolution, you’ll want to move at super-fibre speed to catch all the latest vacancies on s1jobs.
