How to find the perfect fit

Anyone who’s ever squeezed themselves into a pair of size eights when their body is screaming out for a size 12, knows the importance of getting the right fit.

Small_Education_2But unlike button-popping breeks that can be ditched at the end of the day, being in an ill-fitting workplace can be uncomfortable, irritating and sometimes difficult to get out of.

For teachers, choosing the right school has far-reaching implications – not only for how happy and supported you feel, but for what kind of teacher you become.

There is always a range of s1jobs vacancies to choose from but picking a ‘forever school’ or at least a ‘long stayer’ requires homework before, during and after your application process.

Start by customising your search – and s1jobs can help you with that – so you don’t waste time trawling through jobs not relevant to you. Narrow down your choices by region, city, town, subject and school type and get an automatic email alert when potential vacancies come up.

One surefire way of getting a feel of a school is to work as a supply teacher. That way the chances are you’ll be first in line when a staff member leaves, goes on maternity leave or retires.

Do as much research as you can. Read the school’s website and inspection reports. Most of the information is there for parents but it’s a great resource for potential teachers who can get a feel for the performance of the school.

Always keep an open mind about what you read. A school with exceptional exam results and outstanding inspection doesn’t guarantee your happy ever after; equally one in special measures might be staffed by a brilliant bunch of committed and inspiring teachers.

When you do get an interview remember it’s a two-way street and you’re also checking them out for a suitable fit. The timing of an interview can be crucial too and can colour any judgement. At the end of the school year learning is a bit more laid-back (aka DVD sessions and concert rehearsals) and can be very different to the start of term when everyone is more focused and alert.

Keep an eye out for the small things: do senior management have their doors firmly closed or welcomingly open? Are kids hanging about the corridors when they should be in class? Such things will tell you more than any questions you could ask.
