We’re not talking actual cycling here but the philosophy of ‘do everything 1% better’ that has taken British cyclists from the back of the peloton to the winner’s podium.

You don’t even have to own a bike to feel the benefits – this is about making small changes to your working habits that will soon add up to big gains.

Every day on s1jobs there are up to 200 call centre vacancies. Grab yourself one of these opportunities and the fun has only just begun, because by implementing some of our ideas, which all come from the latest research on improving performance at work, you could make your mark very quickly.

  1. Buy a plant

Dr Chris Knight from Exeter University, one of a group of psychologists who have been studying office environments for over a decade, has concluded employees were 15% more productive when workplaces are filled with just a few houseplants.

Don’t wait for your employer to ‘green-up’ your desk, do it yourself.

  1. Stand up

James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona says: “The default has become to sit. We need the default to be standing.”

He’s talking about the negative impact on our health from sitting at a desk all day. But it’s not just our bones and blood pressure that could be improved by getting to our feet, standing increases focus and alertness.

So if you’re on the phone, get on your feet. You’ll perform better and be healthier.

  1. Take a walk

Don’t spend your lunch hour eating a sandwich at your desk, get out and walk for at least half an hour. Researchers at the University of Birmingham have discovered it’s the best way to beat the afternoon slump.

  1. Eat well at work

Feeling tired and lacklustre? Ditch the sugary snacks and soft drinks and switch to nuts, fresh fruit and water.

The British Heart Foundation says: “Without regular well-balanced meals or enough water, employees may suffer from headaches, feel sluggish or have difficulty concentrating.”

  1. Meditate

A study led by Katherine MacLean of the University of California suggests during and after meditation training, we’re more skilled at keeping focus.

Other studies have found enhanced abilities to cope with stress.

So doing nothing for 10 minutes every day may be one of the fastest ways to improve your performance.
