While there is always an element of speculation when it comes to future tech, there are some areas experts believe offer solid long-term prospects.
1. Have Your Head in the Clouds
Once it meant no more than fluffy white things in the sky (or those big grey things over Scotland). Today the cloud refers to a way of storing information virtually and, as more companies rely on cloud storage, a host of specialised jobs will grow in demand alongside.
Increasingly, businesses will hold information on a mixture of private and public cloud space. Individuals skilled at moving information between the two and are well-versed in the all-important cloud security will be much sought after.
Cloud technology also depends on the skills of programmers. Those who know their way around Java, Perl, Python and Ruby will be cooler than a Champagne ice bucket.
2. Wear it on your sleeve – your talent not your heart
Okay, so Google Glass didn’t work out. Don’t think that’s the end of the wearable tech story. Although the technology is still being explored, the fact is, wearables are just too convenient to be dismissed.
As more uses are found for the tech – including hands-free training for technical jobs or streamlining the customer sales process – the needs for specialists in this futuristic art will increase.
Those with the hardware know-how will become as attractive as a jug of water at a chilli eating contest.
Also in demand will be those with the smarts to design and develop the apps and analytics programs that will give wearable tech its different uses.
3. Analyse this
We live in a world of information overload. The data just keeps on rolling in, but only when it’s organised and analysed does it become valuable.
Bringing all this data together from different sources will be the role of data integration engineers. Expect to see lots for opportunities for data systems architects including those of big data software.
As with any growing area, managers are needed to lead these new teams. Step forward chief digital officers and chief data officers, your time is now.
