Future-proof your oil and gas skills

oil 2Twenty years ago software engineers couldn’t have imagined applying for a role on s1jobs where they’d be creating augmented reality mobile apps.

But time and tech moves at a dizzying pace and this is just as true in the oil and gas industry.

This sector has changed dramatically and it’s why energy body OPITO is currently trying to figure out how to ensure workers have the skills to keep up.

This is tricky – many of the jobs these skills will be needed for don’t even exist yet – but it’s necessary so employers can give staff opportunities to prepare for the future.

With an estimated 40,000 people needing to be recruited over the next two decades, new programmes will be developed to train new and current staff.

So what might these new skills be?

Let’s find out because having them will help protect your career.

Soft skills

Employers already rate candidates who can bring a number of desirable soft skills to a new role. But leadership, teamwork and communication are going to become even more sought after by companies as the industry evolves.

Adaptable skills

It helps to be a chameleon – if you’re able to adapt to change very quickly in a new environment, you’ll find yourself thriving as the sector moves into the future.

You’ll need to be able to keep up with new qualifications so take part in online training courses whenever you can.

You can also keep up with industry news and events on s1jobs.

Tech skills

It goes without saying the technology we’re using in 2018 is not going to be the same in 20 years.

If you’re someone who stays up to date with the latest machinery and software – and you’re able to use then confidently – employers will see this as hugely advantageous.

Firstly, it won’t take as long to train you up. Secondly, improving previous skills as well as adding new ones shows enthusiasm and a can-do attitude.

Transferable skills

There are many opportunities in oil and gas for those without engineering or geology degrees, especially if you have a background in tech. The skills you may have used in construction, engineering or manufacturing can all find a new home onshore or offshore.
