Get your foot on the property ladder

Thanks to our longstanding home-owning culture and a love of property-based TV shows – everything from Homes by the Sea to Location, Location, Location – we’re all armchair experts when it comes to buying houses.

Granny Ina, for one, is as alert as a meerkat whenever a For Sale sign pops up in her street.

Property_2The world of property, however, is actually more complex than it might seem.

It includes everything from one-off home sales to selling vast new home developments – and much of the machinery involved is generally a bit of a mystery.

That’s why it takes serious professionals in so many different areas to get the best deals for builders, clients and estate agencies.

For those up for the challenge, however, the world of property offers a fast-paced working environment and a great career path.

If you like the sound of that, consider the following roles, and check out the current vacancies on s1jobs.

Estate Agent

Becoming an estate agent means taking up a role on the frontline, visiting homes and working directly with clients in their quest to buy or sell. Success comes from having the gift of the gab and a true entrepreneurial spirit.

Do well and there are opportunities to become an office manager and grow your own team of experts.

Experience helps, of course, especially if you’re after the top roles on s1jobs but there are also opportunities to start as a trainee sales negotiator.

Building Surveyor

Not everyone was born to be a sales pro. Thankfully, the property sector always needs professionals who are happier using technical talents.

The work of the building surveyor, for example, overlaps property and construction.

As well as assessing building projects, they inspect existing properties on behalf of would-be buyers, offering detailed reports that can identify defects and repair options – this makes them invaluable.

Accountant

Yes, they get everywhere these number-crunchers. The world of property is always hungry for top notch accountants. Having chartered status (CA) is pretty much a given and a few years experience under your belt would be a bonus.

Companies are looking for people who can deal with residential, commercial and technical aspects of property accounting.

An up-to-date technical knowledge of UK accounting standards and IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) are also desirable.

Marketing Manager

Swish new housing developments will usually have an individual or a team working on their marketing strategy. The role is usually two-fold. It’s partly to attract buyers to take up residence in a new custom-built home or apartment.

But it’s also about letting the general public know about what’s happening at the fab new development and creating a buzz around it.
