Get ready for summer jobs

Show all Retail jobs in Scotland

’Tis the season to be jolly.  Well thinking about summer jobs and, all across Scotland, the retail sector is perfect for anyone looking to earn cash quickly.

Retail_2_SmallThat’s because many retail roles are open to candidates with no qualifications or experience yet offer great work hours flexibility, especially if you’re on a break from college or university.

So, let’s take a look at the positions that will top up your summer spending money – or even give you a start in a brand new, long-term career.

Sales Assistant

Working on the frontline in stores across Scotland, the sales assistant is a classic entry-level retail job and has a variety of duties.

These include stocking shelves, handling purchases and helping customers find everything they need, from that sauce they saw on the telly to ‘this one, but in a bigger size’.

Because you’ll be working with the public, you can quickly learn customer service skills that will be valuable when you go for other jobs in the future.

What you’ll need: As well as a can-do attitude, as an ambassador for the shop and the brand, you need to be good with people, and have plenty of patience.

Stock Control Assistant

Often working in the storeroom of supermarkets or department stores, the stockist’s mission is to ensure a constant and steady supply of merchandise. Although working mostly behind the scenes or taking notes in the aisles, this is an important role. After all, the success of every retail outlet depends on being able to deliver the goods.

Overnight stockists use the wee small hours to get the shelves and displays ready for business the next day.

What you’ll need: Top-notch admin skills for managing inventory and keeping methodical records, as well as a keen eye for detail.

Cashier

Also known in Scotland as ‘being on the tills’, a cashier is responsible for the final stage of shopping: paying for everything. In supermarkets this involves scanning items and handling cash or card transactions.

In department stores it can also mean carefully packing items and even arranging finance options, such as store credit cards, with customers.

As with most retail jobs, customer service is an important element – no-one likes to be served by Mr or Mrs Glum.

What you’ll need: People skills, and basic arithmetic, although the computerised till does most of the work for you.
