This year’s summer break might have done more than refresh you for the next term in the classroom.
It may have opened your eyes to the possibility of using your teaching qualifications to allow you to travel.
Are you an art teacher? You could lend your talents to one of the many painting schools that operate in countries such as Italy, welcoming guests who want to brush up on their skills on canvas.
If you are a PE teacher then anywhere with a thriving gym community, such as Dubai, will be a great place to find alternative employment.
Home economics? How do you fancy running a chalet in the Alps, preparing delicious dishes for skiers when they come off the slopes and taking to the piste yourself on your day off?
Teaching qualifications can open doors around the world and these sort of off-road experiences can also boost your career here when you are looking for your next position in education with s1jobs.
They’ll give you a mix of life skills and experience that you can bring to your classroom activities and your pupils will be impressed.
If you are a language teacher then you’ll already have worked abroad as part of your degree but even if your skills stretch no further than ordering a beer you can still put your teaching qualifications to good use overseas by providing lessons in English for the locals.
True you’ll have to do some extra studies first but it will be worth it. The best known of all the many courses available is Teaching English as a Foreign Language. This involves around 140 hours of study which you can complete either on-line or in the classroom.
And for an even more in-depth course you could apply to the University of Stirling’s MSc in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
The entry qualification for this course is an existing degree and by the time you’ve finished it you’ll be equipped to pass on vocabulary, grammar, written and spoken skills to anyone.
And don’t worry if you can’t speak another language yourself. Most language schools offering English want their teachers to stick entirely to English, as this has been shown to achieve the best and fastest results.
So that’s the low-down. Now it only remains for you to decide where you want your classroom to be. Here or somewhere the sun shines 365 days a year? Maybe it’s time to take that sabbatical.
