If you’re a fan of TV show Suits, you’ll be familiar with the top-tier law firm that is Pearson Specter Litt and its prestigious employees.
You may look at successful attorney Harvey Specter strutting around in his $12,000 suit, winning high-profile cases, and think such jobs surely don’t exist.
But if you work your way to the top in a large law firm you could find yourself in just such a position.
Whatever job title you hold, there are many benefits of working in a large law firm.
Challenging Work
Larger firms take on a higher workload than smaller outfits due to the number of employees and tend to tackle more complex, ambitious cases. It may be more challenging work but it keeps you on your toes and can be great for improving your skills. Think mergers and white-collar crimes as opposed to dealing with local landlords.
High Salaries
Despite Suits being slightly silly for TV purposes in terms of its flash cars and expensive haircuts, large law firms do pay higher salaries than small firms. You may also receive better compensation packages with bigger bonuses and other company perks.
Promotion Opportunities
It might seem obvious but many people forget the bigger the company you work for, the more opportunities there are for you to advance. Even if you start out as a junior associate, there are plenty of promotions available that could take you up to senior partner – with that coveted honour of having your name up on the wall.
Excellent Training
Large law firms will have established summer associate programmes, but they will also give proper training and mentoring to continuously ensure staff are the best of the best. This is something smaller law firms often lack.
Different Clients
Bigger firms will have a wider range of diverse clients and this gives less experienced lawyers the chance to work and learn in a variety of specialisms.
Better Resources
Working in an office that’s better equipped makes the job more enjoyable. Large law firms will undoubtedly have more extensive libraries, cafeterias and even an office gym. As it’s not unusual for lawyers to work more than 60 hours a week, these facilities will be a welcome addition to your average day.
