Great foundations for a career

Show all Construction/Trades jobs across Scotland

If ever there was proof positive that Scotland’s construction sector continues to build on strong foundations, despite the volatile nature of the industry, it comes in the Rise of the Apprentice.

constr2It’s been revealed CITB Scotland directly trained 1930 new Modern Apprentices in 2017. That’s a rise of 7% on the year before and a significant 36% higher than in 2011.

With CITB predicting construction will need more than 10,000 new workers over the next five years, it has also announced up to £10,250 of CITB grant funding for every apprentice employed.

While apprenticeships are vital for the industry to grow, there are also many construction jobs that are ideal for absolute beginners. Here are just a few you can find on s1jobs.

Labourer

Many trades people, including bricklayers, begin in construction as an entry-level labourer. By its nature, this is a physically demanding job – but just think of it as free gym membership.

Not only will you build muscles and stamina but you could build a career and climb the ladder to become project manager.

Top tip: Be hands-on! Some construction skills can be self-taught and you can boost your own expertise with projects, from building a garden shed to plastering walls.

Site Maintenance Assistant

Don’t mistake this role for that of dogsbody. Reporting to the site manager you’re responsible for a variety of maintenance tasks, from keeping the construction area tidy and hazard-free to admin work. There are no set qualifications and, simply by being in the thick of things, you can find plenty of opportunities for upskilling.

Top tip: Show initiative. Ask your site manager how you can contribute to the team and show your passion for learning new skills on the job.

Landscape Labourer

Don’t forget landscaping is an important part of many builds, especially in new home developments. This is one role where you’ll definitely be expected to get stuck in right away, mowing, planting and digging. This is hard outdoors work, especially in winter, but it’s a trade that is in constant demand.

Top tip: use your downtime wisely. When everyone else is reading the papers and drinking tea, learn all you can about horticulture and gardening. One day you could be running your own business.
