The greatness in every teacher

This year’s Scottish Education Awards will once more pay tribute to those who spend their lives nurturing the lives of children and young people.

education2Launched in 2001, the annual event highlights the hard work and innovation taking place in Scotland’s classrooms.

The awards are a fitting tribute to our educators, but what really makes a teacher so great? Let’s find out, with a little help from some famous names.

Giving

“Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty.”

So said Albert Einstein, the man who taught the world a thing or two about . . . well, our world. He knew the best teachers are those who make learning feel invigorating not laborious, a reward not a chore.

Shaping

“The answer for all our national problems – the answer for all the problems of the world – comes to a single word. That word is education.”

Lyndon B. Johnson, past President of the USA, recognised teachers not only share information, they shape young minds to become responsible, caring adults – people who can overcome global challenges.

Building

“Teachers who educate children deserve more honour than parents, who merely gave them birth. For the latter provided mere life, while the former ensured a good life.”

Aristotle might have struggled to get that by some on Parents’ Evening, but the philosopher knew excellent teachers give their pupils foundation stones upon which to build a prosperous, rewarding future.

Caring

“Education is much more than a matter of imparting the knowledge and skills by which narrow goals are achieved. It is also about opening the child’s eyes to the needs and rights of others.”

You can also rely on the Dalai Lama to hit the nail on the head (in a gentle, non-violent way, of course!).

Teaching empathy and compassion for others is just as important as the lessons being imparted in the classroom.

Creating

“I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”

Creativity and passion are at the heart of teaching and for writer John Steinbeck such noble skills make the great teacher a truly great artist.
